This featured project highlights a thoughtful and seamless in-law addition designed to provide the homeowners with comfortable, updated one-floor living without sacrificing the classic charm of their Plymouth Colonial.
The goal for the homeowners was twofold: create a spacious new “Great Room” for gathering and relaxation, while strategically converting the existing first-floor living room and bedroom into a private, accessible Master Suite. Through a close collaboration between HRL Architecture and Almar’s Development Process, we were able to deliver a functional floor plan that blends perfectly with the original architecture.
The Great Room & Entry
The new addition features a bright, airy great room characterized by beautiful hardwood flooring and ample natural light. To ensure modern convenience and security, we installed a Schlage Camelot Keypad door handle. The transition to the outdoors is handled by an Andersen 10 Series Retractable Screen door, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the coastal Plymouth breeze while keeping the space protected.
The Master Suite & Spa-Like Bath
The heart of the first-floor conversion is the new Master Suite. The bathroom was designed with a focus on both aesthetics and long-term accessibility, featuring high-quality materials curated for durability and style:
- Vanity & Fixtures: A Wyndham Mirdina 48” Vanity in a dark finish (sourced via Ferguson) serves as the centerpiece, complemented by a Delta Arvo Widespread Faucet. Lighting is provided by a Maxim Malaga 29″ Vanity Light with elegant marble glass.
- Shower: We installed a Sterling Vikrell Accord Shower Insert paired with a Delta Linden Monitor 17 Series Dual Function Pressure Balanced Shower system for a consistent and comfortable experience.
- Comfort & Safety: The homeowners selected an American Standard Cadet Chair Height toilet for ease of use. For the flooring, we utilized Panaria Craft 12×24 Slip Resistant Tile in “Wool” from Bellew Tile in Rockland, ensuring a safe, non-slip surface that doesn’t compromise on the modern aesthetic.
This project is a perfect example of how the homeowners were able to adapt their forever home to meet their changing needs, combining HRL’s expert design with Almar’s dedicated remodeling process.
