What is a HERS rating?
Building a More Energy-Efficient Home in Massachusetts?
Ever wondered how energy-efficient your home is? When considering an addition or large renovation we may need to obtain a HERS energy rating as part of the process. So what is a HERS rating?
HERS stands for Home Energy Rating System. According to the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) it is defined as, “The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. It’s also the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance.” It measures how efficient your home is, and where you can make changes to improve your efficiency.
Why Do I Need a HERS Rating?
Massachusetts is increasingly adopting the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) which means more towns are requiring energy audits on remodeled homes.
What’s Involved in a HERS Rating?
A rater will assess various aspects of your home, including:
- Walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs
- Windows, doors, vents, and ductwork
- HVAC and water heating systems
- Insulation levels
