At Almar Building & Remodeling, we love turning a homeowner’s vision into a stunning, functional reality. We recently completed a comprehensive first-floor renovation in Duxbury, Massachusetts, completely transforming a kitchen and living room into a unique, warm gathering space.
The heart of this structural remodel centers around a magnificent, custom-built stone fireplace. The project goal was perfectly blending coastal warmth with modern functionality—a design aesthetic that beautifully reflects the home’s historic South Shore seaside location.
Inspired by the Beach: A Custom Stone Fireplace
The undisputed centerpiece of this Duxbury living room renovation is the beautiful new stone fireplace. The homeowner’s inspiration was wonderfully personal: she wanted the stonework to feel like a collection of treasures her children might have gathered during a walk along the Massachusetts coastline.
To achieve this natural, yet highly refined look, our design-build team combined Multi-Colored & Nantucket Round Stone. These specific stones feature a perfectly weathered, organic shape reminiscent of classic New England beach stones. To enhance the coastal warmth and tie the entire feature wall together, we utilized Ardex Dove Grey Grout. The soft grey tone of the grout perfectly complements the varied earth tones of the stone, creating a backdrop that is both visually striking and incredibly welcoming.
For the heating element, we seamlessly framed and integrated a Nordik 36 Direct Vent Gas Fireplace into the custom stone structure. A direct-vent gas fireplace offers the timeless charm of a traditional hearth with the clean convenience, safety, and energy efficiency expected by modern Massachusetts homeowners—a perfect blend of form and function.
Function and Flow: Built-in Storage Benches
A fireplace provides warmth, but what really makes a living space shine is thoughtful design that enhances daily life. We custom-built wood-topped benches with storage on either side of the fireplace.
- Smart Storage Solutions: Clean, white drawers offer essential, easily accessible storage for blankets, games, or living room necessities, keeping the main high-traffic area clutter-free.
- Extra Lounge Seating: The low-profile benches double as cozy window seats—a perfect spot for reading, relaxing, or enjoying the warmth of the fire on a chilly New England evening.
- Design Cohesion: The rich, stained wood tops of the benches perfectly match the custom timber mantle. This ensures the entire feature wall feels cohesive, integrating beautifully with the surrounding wood paneling and gorgeous hardwood floors.
