A Cozy Coastal Transformation

Custom Fireplace and Built-in Storage in Duxbury

At Almar, we love turning a homeowner’s vision into a stunning reality. We recently remodeled a kitchen and living room in Duxbury, Massachusetts. This allowed us to create a unique and warm gathering space. The room is centered around a magnificent, custom-built fireplace. The project goal was blending warmth and functionality. It also needed a distinctive coastal feel. This design reflects the home’s seaside location perfectly.

Inspired by the Beach: A Custom Stone Fireplace

The centerpiece of this remodel is the beautiful new stone fireplace. The homeowner’s inspiration was wonderfully personal: she wanted the stones to feel like something her children might have collected on a beach walk.

To achieve this natural, yet refined look, we combined Multi-Colored & Nantucket Round Stone. These stones have that perfectly weathered, organic shape reminiscent of beach stones. To enhance the coastal warmth and tie the look together, we used Ardex Dove Grey Grout. The soft grey tone of the grout complements the varied colors of the stone. This created a backdrop that is both striking and incredibly welcoming.

The fireplace itself features a Nordik 36 Direct Vent Gas Fireplace, which we meticulously framed and built into the stone structure. A direct-vent gas fireplace offers the charm of a real fire with the convenience and efficiency. A perfect blend of form and function!

Function and Flow: Built-in Benches

A fireplace provides warmth, but what really makes a living space shine is thoughtful design that enhances daily life. We custom-built wood-topped benches with storage on either side of the fireplace.

  • Storage: The white drawers offer essential, easily accessible storage for blankets, games, or any living room necessities, helping to keep the area clean and clutter-free.
  • Seating: The benches create cozy window seats—a perfect spot for reading, relaxing, or enjoying the warmth of the fire on a chilly evening.
  • Cohesion: The rich, stained wood tops of the benches perfectly match the customwood mantle, ensuring the entire feature wall is cohesive and beautifully integrated into the surrounding wood paneling and gorgeous hardwood floors.

This Duxbury project is a testament to how custom design can transform a standard room into a cherished gathering spot. By listening to the homeowner’s vision and utilizing carefully selected materials like the beach-inspired stone and custom built-ins, we delivered a space that truly feels like home
