How Are Insurance Repairs Handled?

Rot Damage

Sometimes something happens that causes damage to your home and you need to remodel out of necessity rather than desire to improve the comfort and functionality. This can be incredibly stressful when you must deal with insurance agents, adjusters, banks/leaders, and contractors, all while feeling limited in what you can do to repair your home.

Luckily, there are ways to make the process smoother, working with a great team and knowing what to ask are two ways that can help. So here are somethings we commonly see and how the process can often work for our experience.

If you have had damage to your home that you need to have the repairs covered thru your insurance be sure to notify your insurance company. For small repairs you may only need to deal with them directly, but for large claims you probably want to bring in a Public Adjuster to work with your contractor as part of your team to advocate on your behalf with your insurance company.

What is A Public Adjuster? Public Insurance adjusters (like Petrocelli in Norwell, Ma) work independently for the homeowner, following an insurance loss. They act as your representative, making sure you are compensated for everything to which you are legally entitled. Public insurance adjusters are not connected in any way to insurance companies; however, they will deal with any insurance carrier, licensed to do business in your state on your behalf.

From our end (your contractor) after we meet to look at the space to start putting together a scope of work, we will need a copy of your insurance report.

Why do we need to see the insurance report? Often the insurance report will include things not discussed during a walk thru with the homeowner this will give us a chance to make sure that we include as many items as possible.  There are also times where you may think that your insurance is covering a part of the project, when they are not.

Once an initial scope of work is put together, we can work with your Public Adjuster to make sure that everything necessary has been included and priced for in a manner to make sure the insurance company will cover it. Often, we have seen homeowners accept payment from the insurance company before they go thru this process and then do not have enough funds to fully repair their home.

Once you have a scope of work together and costs and it is approved by all parties you can get the contacts signed and move on to getting your home back to normal.
