Should I choose a Tiled Shower or Fiberglass/Acrylic Shower?

Tile Shower

When remodeling a bathroom there are so many decisions that need to be made for such a small room in your house.   The most decisions of any remodeling project will need to be made for your bathroom.  From faucets to accessories, it can be daunting to decide what you want to select, your shower choice is no different.

While not your only choice for a shower in your bathroom Fiberglass/Acrylic and Tile are the 2 most popular.   Acrylic showers are usually the most cost effective, they may also be the right installation for other reasons.   Typically, an acrylic shower is easier to clean and maintain and require less maintenance over time than a tiled shower.  But you are limited in most cases by the size options and designs available for the acrylic, with those limited options you may have to pad out or open walls to make the right size fit.

With Tiled Shower walls and floor, there is usually an increase in cost over Acrylic, due not only to the materials but the labor. A tiled shower allows for you to customize the space and fit your shower into the footprint available.  There are also endless choices of tile types, colors, and styles that can be used in a custom tile showered, along with plumbing fixture options.   While you maybe have a nicer custom shower, you also need to remember that they are more maintenance over time.  Not only are tiled shower harder to clean, but over time you will need to repair grout lines that may deteriorate or discolor over time.

When selecting tiled vs acrylic there is also the consideration of time.  A prefabricated acrylic/fiberglass shower can be installed in a matter of a day or two and be operational, where a tiled shower can take as long as 3 weeks (if you are getting custom shower doors installed as well).   In the scheme of a bathroom project timeline, this could make your bathroom project last longer.
