Hanover: Home Maintenance Tips for February

As we push on thru winter here in New England, and now that it is February we are looking ahead at the next set of Home Maintenance tasks that we can tackle. As any homeowner knows our house need constant love and attention. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Clean and vacuum your Curtains
Curtains will trap dust that is floating around your room. When they aren’t cleaned the dust can build up and become compacted, and if not cleaned can start to effect the air quality in your home.
  2. Check caulking around showers and bathtubs and repair as needed.
Cracked caulking can become a place for mold to grow, that’s signal that it a sign that it is time to replace it. The caulking creates a watertight seal between the tub and wall which will prevent water from leaking under the tub and rotting around it.
  3. Replace batteries in Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors
Last month we suggested that you make sure your detectors are operating; now you should make sure that in addition to checking it this month that you change the batteries to make sure it keeps working. Carbon monoxide can be lethal, be sure your alarms are working.
  4. Clean garbage disposal
Crush Ice, baking soda, Citrus rinds – this will help eliminate odors.
  5. ice-damCheck for ice Dams, Icicles and leaking
When snow accumulates on your roof, melts from the roof up and is trapped between the roof shingles and the layer of snow, it runs down the roof and then refreezes at the roof’s edge that is called ice damming.

If the water works its way under the roofing the water causes a host of problems you can and can’t see. Some of the easiest problems to find include gutters sagging from the weight of the ice, loose roof shingles, and can result in rot.

  6. Repair any interior wall damage; touch up or repaint as needed.

Like regular oil changes, physical and showering spending a little bit of time each month to do some basic work around the house could end up saving you thousands in the long run. It can be a long list and look daunting, that’s why over the next few months we will try and break it down to smaller action items to tackle.
